74 - Gnadenteich Diamond

The Diamond's Story

"This diamond was purchased by my great-uncle, Jaan Gnadenteich. Purchased by Jaan while he was fleeing from war-torn Estonia during WWII. It was offered to him by a Polish count who could not persuade the captain to accept in lieu of 100 gold rubes ($50US or 2 1/2 oz.). Gold was $20/oz. -1944. My uncle had sufficient funds and they all (my mother, great-uncle, his mother and the polish count) were able to flee to Sweden."
